Art work

Juana Zufriategui

1) “Art is a mediator of the unspeakable.”

(Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, 1749-1832).   He was a poet.

2)a) I believe that this painting matches the definition I choose as the paint transmits different emotions and feelings. For example I can feel love as two sister are hugging each other. The artwork Is the mediator of the unspeakable because it transmits/expresses feelings or emotions, they are not being written or speak(this is not the correct tense – spoken about). I believe that through art you can express yourself without using words and people can understand it in many different ways.

2)b)

3)a)This artwork is a huge sculpture of a monkey made of cardboard mostly recycled. The technique that laurence vallieres uses to make her sculptures is to stick with a special glue the recycled cardboard little by little onto a cardboard structure, while creating the sculpture of the animal that ends up (looking like)being a wooden sculpture.

3)b) In the art work I choose, a figure of a monkey is represented. The monkey looks tired and seems to be sleeping as it has the eyes are closed and it is kind supporting his body on his arms while it is seated. Moreover, I believe that this sculpture is a realistic artwork as the artist is representing  something real, an animal. Are the colours realistic too?

3)c) This artwork is monochromatic . It is made with warm colours, she worked with brown exclusively which was the colour given by the material, as it brings pasion, joy, enthusiasm and stimulate the spectators.

It is a sculpture that represents the form of a monkey, which occupies a huge space (in order to be appreciated in details).

I believe that the monkey is not well proportionate as the legs are to short and skinny while the body is enormous and the arms are large, but I love the how the sculpture was made. While the monkey is seated on the floor, one of the legs is softly laying on it and the other is half ovate from the floor forming kind of a triangle. Furthermore, in the middle of the two legs, it is perfectly well located vertically his body that has an oval shape and from the upper part of it, his arms come out. They are both really long and well located, one of them is stretched down with his hand resting on the floor next to one of the legs, while the other is resting on the other leg but also with the hand on the floor in the middle of both legs. Finally on the top of the body, you can find the head witch is quite big in relation with his legs. In his head, we can see his particular face which is making gestures .

3)d) As it is a sculpture, I first looked at the expression of the face as it first called my attention because it has a really particular face. Afterwards, I looked downwards to the lower part of the body including his arms and legs as the monkey is sitting in a pleasant way, the arms fall very softly on the floor causing a soft support of his hands and his legs are laying on the floor very gently so it catches the attention of my eyes. Then, I looked at his tummy, his chest and finally I looked at his shoulders because they did not call much my attention. Despite this, although it didn’t catch my attention at first, the shoulders made me understand the expression of his tired face.

3)e) The sculpture makes me feel calm and relieved as I can see that the monkey seems to be resting leaving behind not only his problems and thoughts but everything that made him tired. Also, it makes me feel pleasure to see that the monkey can rest so calmly without being bothered by anyone, this  gives me peace. The expression of his face and the fact that he has his shoulder down, helps me to develop my feeling towards the sculpture because I can see myself reflected and see how nice it is to rest. Finally, how his legs are positioned and how his hands lay softly on the floor triggered my feelings as I can see that the monkey is calm and comfortable.

3)f) I believe that the message of the artwork that I choose is that although you have a lot of things to do daily and you have many problems, you have  to take some time for yourself and rest well because otherwise you will feel very tired, like the monkey that is resting but at the same time it seems that he is a little tired because of the expression of the mouth. However, seeing it from another point of view, the message can be that human being have to stop animal abuse and take care of nature because the animals themselves suffer. As we can see, the monkey can be tired and exhausted as they are being mistreated and their habitats are being destroyed,  but the animals cannot do anything about it and that is why the monkey is comfortable and resting. Furthermore, I believe that the artwork can express hatred and sadness towards human beings from the point of view of animals as they are the ones who are suffering, but also it can express calmness and happiness as the monkey is sleeping which can give human beings pleasure. [Finally, the topic according to both messages is referring to animal abuse or killing so as to satisfy the needs of human beings which happens all over the world or also,  the topic can be associated with the fact that people as well as animals need rest so as to be healthy.] The ideas get a little mixed in this conclusion, try to rephrase it.

4) I choose the song “Tired” by Alan Walker and Gavin James as I believe that it can be connected with both of my interpretations of the artwork. The song talks about a love relationship and also about the tiredness of a person and the inability of another person to help. This part of the song can be connected with the artwork as I believe that although the monkey is tired of animals being abused or killed, I am not able to stop that. although I can contribute, it is not enough. The song says “ let me love you when your heart is tired”, which is also connected with the artwork as animals even though they are tired and exhausted, they let themselves be loved by humans or by the animals themselves. Moreover, the song also describes the tiredness of a person which can be connected with the interpretation of the artwork that human beings need to sleep because they are so tired. “ Cold hands, red eyes”. Finally, I believe that the song is also related with the artwork as the monkey or the human beings are tired but they tried to escape from that tiredness by sleeping or resting as in the song the woman escapes from her tiredness and problems by rolling up a cigarette.  “Just roll up a cigarette, Just forget about this mess, Waiting on the sidelines, From the sidelines”.

Tired

Alan Walker, Gavin James

I see those tears in your eyes
I feel so helpless inside
Oh love, there’s no need to hide
Just let me love you when your heart is tired
Cold hands, red eyes
Packed your bags at midnight
They’ve been there for weeks
You don’t know what goodbye means
Just roll up a cigarette
Just forget about this mess
Waiting on the sidelines
From the sidelines
I see those tears in your eyes
And I feel so helpless inside
Oh love, there’s no need to hide
Just let me love you when your heart is tired
If your ghost pulls you up high
And it feels like you’ve lost who you are
My love, there’s no need to hide
Just let me love you when your heart is tired
Just let me love you
Just let me love you
Just let me love you
Just let me love you when your heart is tired
And you whisper, I’m alright
But I see through your white lies
But these walls don’t talk
And if they could, they’d say
Can’t hide the secrets
You can’t forget about this mess
I’m waiting on the sidelines
From the sidelines
I see those tears in your eyes
And I feel so helpless inside
Oh love, there’s no need to hide
Just let me love you when your heart is tired
If your ghost pulls you up high
And it feels like you’ve lost who you are
My love, there’s no need to hide
Just let me love you when your heart is tired
Just let me love you
Just let me love you
Just let me love you
Just let me love you when your heart is tired
I see those tears in your eyes
So helpless inside
There’s no need to hide
Let me love you when your heart is tired

It is art? Why?

It is art? Why?

From my point of view after reading the text, I believe that the artwork named “the fountain” by Marcel Duchamp is art because it is an intervention by an original and differentiated artistic character on a space or object. The urinal was modified by Duchamp’s intervention; “he lays the heavy porcelain object on its back and turns it around, so it appears to be upside down. He then signs and dates it in black paint on the left-hand side of its outer rim, with the pseudonym “R. Mutt 1917” ”. Only by signing the artwork and changing its position, the simple urinal became an art-work. I think that whenever any object is changed, even if it is minimal by human intervention, it becomes art as well as if it transmit a message and the intention of the artist also counts at the time of deciding whether is an art-work or not. That is why I believe that “ The fountain” by Marcel Duchamp even if it is a simple urinary, it is art. People may think by first seeing it that it is only an object and not an artwork. However, it is not what you see, but the way you see it and that is why,  it can be considered a piece of art.

Art work

Creative process description

This sculpture of a monkey is the artwork that I used as a starting point for my work. These artwork was made by the famous artist laurence vallieres during no limit street art boras in 2015.

Technique: the artist uses recycled cardboard to make her sculptures. The technique that laurence vallieres uses to make her sculptures is to stick with a special glue the recycled cardboard little by little onto a cardboard structure, while creating the sculpture of the animal that ends up being a wooden sculpture.

For this art project that we have been working during some weeks in art classes, I was inspired by the canadian artist laurence vallieres. At first, I didn’t know what to do so I went to see her artwork and an idea came to my mind. As my creative process required me to support myself in the artwork by valliers, I decided to use the message that she transmits through her sculpture and represented in my work with an animal as her sculptures are always some kind of animal. I found it really interested her pieces of art not only because I love animals, so being able to draw an animal was incredible to me but also because I was surprised by the message. Although, I don’t know which is the real message, I was able to interpret one on my own which is that although you have a lot of things to do daily and you have many problems, you have  to take some time for yourself, rest well and be happy because otherwise you will feel very tired, like the monkey that is resting but at the same time it seems that he is a little tired because of the expression of the mouth. As I could see interpret this message, I decide to draw two contrast, two sides.

As you can see, if you look to the left of the drawing, you are able to see a tired and sad elephant who is surrounded by a cold atmosphere, is surrounded by the winter. when we are in winter, the grass grows very slowly, the leaves fall and the trees became wet representing sadness as a whole. The elephant’s trunk is down as well as the position of its head so we can see that it is tired like the monkey in the sculpture of valliers.

Moreover, if you look to the right side of the drawing, you are able to see colours, a happy elephant who is not tired. The elephant is surrounded by a warm atmosphere, by summer. In summer flowers grow and the trees become stronger and colorful representing happiness and joy as a whole. The animal is smiling and his trunk is looking up meaning that he is cheerful and happy.

I use this picture of an elephant as a sketch to draw the bodies of both elephants. For the heads, I decided not to draw an sketchual first as I believed it wasn’t necessary. However, this picture was really useful at the time of drawing the bodies.

Finally, I believe that I was able to express the message correctly as by drawing both sides of something which in my case is an elephant, I was able to express the message as most people see first the left side in which the elephant is sad and then the right side in which the elephant is happy being able to understand that although you are tired you have to be happy. However, I think I could have drawn the shapes of the elephant better as they are not very proportion because I found quite difficult to draw them and I could have made a better use of the shadows. In spite of this, I believe that the idea and what I wanted to transmit is clear.
